Description

Set of Six Framed Engravings of Exotic Animals After Nicholas Marechal Simon-Charles Miger 1736-1828 was a French engraver most noted for the plates he produced for the the menagerie for the National Museum Of Natural History in Paris. The artist of the original watercolors was Nicholas Marechal. After the French revolution the Natural History Museum was founded. This replaced the royal menagerie at Versailles. Before the revolution people could see exotic animals in traveling shows that were banned after the revolution. Naturalists Lacepede ,St. Hilaire and Cuvier compiled a catalog of the animals in the zoo. From that watercolors then engravings were created of the collection. These are original engravings from that period. Framed in silvered wood frames and well matted.
